What our clients tell us
Ramanjit Parmar
Office Manager, Mississauga
September 2025
The document preparation workshop sorted out something that had been causing friction in our office for a long time. Different staff were numbering pages differently, exhibit labels were inconsistent, and the quality pass at the end was informal at best. After the session, we had a checklist everyone uses and the documents going out now are noticeably more consistent. CAD 150 for a three-hour session was straightforward value.

We commissioned the bilingual materials project because a large portion of our client base reads Punjabi more comfortably than English. The English source had a lot of professional language in it that did not translate cleanly. JSM Law rewrote it in plain English first, which made a real difference to the Punjabi version. The community reading test caught two phrases that our internal team had missed. Final files arrived on time, in both formats.

Our office moved case management software last year and it was more disruptive than we had anticipated. We brought JSM Law in for the second migration — from our interim spreadsheet system to a proper document management platform. Having a written migration sequence before anything changed, and role-based training rather than one generic session, made a significant difference. The 30-day review caught two staff members who were still using the old method for one specific task type.

I was a little sceptical about whether a three-hour workshop would actually change how staff prepared documents. It did, largely because the facilitator used our own document types rather than generic examples. The formatting sheet is now pinned above every workstation. We have since booked a second session for the two staff members who were on leave the first time.

The bilingual materials project came in at the quoted price and the revised timeline after our first round of feedback. Not all service providers manage that. The community reading test was the part I had not seen elsewhere — the two participants flagged a form instruction that was technically correct in Punjabi but would have confused most readers without a legal background. That kind of detail matters when clients are making decisions based on those materials.

Operations Coordinator, Burlington
July 2025
We engaged JSM Law for the technology advisory after a previous software change had not landed well. The difference this time was the written rollout calendar and the sequencing plan — knowing that client-facing files would only migrate after the internal team was comfortable with the system. The 90-day review was useful because by that point we had identified a couple of workflows that needed to be adapted. The team came back in to address those without additional billing.

Three engagements, in more detail
The Situation
Document Standards — Mississauga Paralegal Office
A three-person paralegal office had no shared document formatting standard. Each staff member had developed their own habits over time, and the resulting inconsistencies were producing packages that required manual correction before going out — adding 30 to 45 minutes to each file.
What We Did
The Document Preparation Skills Workshop was delivered on-site over a half-day. The facilitator reviewed three of the office's actual recent document types as practice material rather than generic examples. A checklist was built to match the office's specific document categories, not a generic template.
The Outcome
The manual correction step was eliminated for standard packages within two weeks. The checklist is now used on every outgoing file. The office booked a follow-up session six months later for two new staff members. Duration: single 3-hour session. Investment: CAD 150.
The Situation
Client Materials — Immigration Services Office, Brampton
An immigration services office serving a predominantly Punjabi-speaking client base had all intake forms and procedural guides in English only. A significant proportion of clients were asking staff to explain forms verbally at each appointment because they could not read them independently.
What We Did
The Bilingual Materials Development project produced English and Punjabi versions of four intake forms, two procedural guides, and one client rights summary. Plain-language editing reduced reading level on the English source by an estimated two grades before translation began. Community reading test involved four community members unfamiliar with the office.
The Outcome
The verbal explanation step at intake was reduced significantly. Staff noted that Punjabi-speaking clients were arriving at appointments with forms partially completed for the first time. Print-ready files have since been reprinted twice. Duration: 5 weeks. Investment: CAD 490.
The Situation
Technology Adoption — Multi-Staff Practice, Oakville
A six-person legal support office was running three separate software platforms — one for document drafting, one for file tracking, and one for billing — with significant data duplication between them. They had identified a single platform that could consolidate all three, but were concerned about disruption during the transition.
What We Did
The Technology Adoption Advisory engagement included a needs assessment (including one function the new platform did not support natively, requiring a workaround), a sequenced migration plan that prioritised the billing module last, role-based training for reception staff, administrators, and the lead practitioner separately, and structured check-ins at 30 and 90 days.
The Outcome
The migration completed within the 8-week window. The billing module migration, staged last as planned, was the smoothest of the three because staff were already comfortable with the platform by that point. The 90-day review identified one workflow that needed to be documented more clearly; this was addressed in the existing engagement. Duration: 8 weeks + reviews. Investment: CAD 920.
